Starting below Lower Salmon Falls Dam, the first two miles are calm, providing a warm-up before the Malad River enters from the right. From here, the whitewater kicks in, delivering a Class III run with fun, splashy wave trains and a steady current. This section is mostly read-and-run, making it a great beginner to intermediate level stretch with family friendly action.

This section runs at a consistent flow since the dams release water for hydroelectric power demand. These steady releases create ideal conditions for the Bliss Wave, making it a highlight of the run when flows are at the minimum, standard flow.

Notable Rapids and Features

Bliss Wave (Chris’s Hole) – A standout wave/hole halfway through the run that serves up big hits and great surf. Rafters should expect to get soaked, but it can be easily missed on the right if you’re not paying attention. Kayakers can catch the eddy and ride the wave. At high flows, it washes out into a fast-moving wave train.

Landslide Rapid – Formed in the 1990s by a major landslide that constricted the river and created one of the bigger drops on the run. It’s a straightforward Class III but gets powerful and pushy at higher flows.

Bliss Bridge Hazard & Take-out – Immediately after Landslide Rapid, the river flows under Bliss Bridge. The bridge pillars create a serious wrap hazard as the current was redirected due to the landslide. Running down the far left shore is the safest option. Be ready to pull into the take-out eddy on the right immediately after the rapid.

Scenery & Wildlife

This stretch is home to abundant birdlife, with eagles, herons, pelicans, and waterfowl common along the route. The river also offers excellent fishing for sturgeon, trout, and smallmouth bass.

Final Notes

With its consistent flows, fun whitewater, and beautiful scenery, the Hagerman stretch is a great year-round run. Be ready for fun wave trains, the Bliss Wave’s hit, and the bridge hazard at the end—and enjoy the ride!
